The month of October is traditionally dedicated in a special way to the Holy Rosary. It is an invitation to rediscover this beautiful and simple prayer, which has been cherished by generations of Catholics and has a special place in the life of the Church.
The Rosary is sometimes described as a prayer of Our Lady, but at its heart it is profoundly Christ-centred. As we pray the Hail Mary, we are led through the great mysteries of the life of Jesus: His birth, His ministry, His Passion and Death, His Resurrection and His glory.
The Rosary helps us to do something that is increasingly difficult in our busy lives: to stop, to become quiet, and to contemplate. As the beads pass through our fingers and the familiar prayers are spoken, our minds and hearts are gradually drawn towards the mysteries of Christ.
Our Lady always points us towards her Son. At Cana she said, “Do whatever he tells you.” The Rosary has the same purpose. Mary accompanies us as we meditate upon the life of Jesus and encourages us to follow Him more faithfully.
The Rosary is also a wonderful prayer for families. Perhaps during October we could make a special effort to pray at least one decade together, or even a whole Rosary when possible. It need not be complicated. We simply gather together and place our needs, our joys and our worries into the hands of Our Lady.
And we should never underestimate the power of a single Hail Mary. When we pray the Rosary, we are not trying to impress God with the number of prayers we can say. Rather, we are repeatedly placing ourselves in the presence of God and asking Our Blessed Mother to pray for us.
October is therefore a good month to take up the Rosary again. If you have not prayed it for some time, begin with one decade. If you already pray it regularly, perhaps try to pray it with greater attention and devotion.
Let us ask Our Lady of the Rosary to pray for our families, our parish, our Church and our world. May she lead us ever closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.
Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.
