INKBLOT POST

Come Holy Spirit

The time between the Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost is one of the most beautiful and contemplative moments in the Catholic liturgical cycle. Coming near the end of the Easter season, it is a period marked by waiting, prayer, expectation, and spiritual preparation. The Church relives the experience of the Apostles after Christ returned to the Father but before the coming of the Holy Spirit.

The Ascension takes place forty days after Easter. Having conquered sin and death through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection, Christ now ascends into heaven and takes His place at the right hand of the Father. The Ascension is not simply Jesus departing from the world; rather, it is the completion of His earthly mission and the beginning of a new mode of His presence within the Church. Humanity itself is raised in Christ into heavenly glory. Yet, although the disciples have seen the Risen Lord, something still remains unfinished. They have received the command to preach the Gospel to all nations, but they are not yet ready to fulfil that mission.

After the Ascension, the Apostles return to Jerusalem as Christ instructed them. Together with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, they gather in the Upper Room and devote themselves to prayer. These nine days form the original novena in Christian tradition and become a model for the Church’s life of prayerful waiting. The liturgy during these days has a quiet and expectant tone. The readings speak repeatedly of Christ’s promise that the Holy Spirit will come upon them and give them strength.

Spiritually, this period is deeply significant. The Apostles already believe in Christ and have witnessed the Resurrection, yet they still experience uncertainty, fear, and weakness. They must wait in faith for the gift that will transform them. This waiting reveals an important truth about the spiritual life: God often prepares souls in silence before sending them into mission. The time between Ascension and Pentecost is therefore not empty time, but a sacred period of interior preparation.

Mary holds a special place during these days. She is present among the Apostles, praying with them and encouraging them in hope. Catholic tradition sees her here as Mother of the Church and model of faithful expectation. Just as she awaited the coming of Christ at the Annunciation through the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, she now waits with the Church for the Spirit to descend once more.

Then, on the feast of Pentecost, the waiting is fulfilled. The Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles in wind and fire, transforming them completely. Fear gives way to courage, uncertainty becomes conviction, and the Church begins her public mission to the world. Pentecost is therefore often called the birthday of the Church. It completes the Easter mystery, for the risen and ascended Christ now pours out His Spirit upon His people.

Liturgically, these days form a bridge between Easter joy and the missionary life of the Church. The white vestments of Easter remain until Pentecost, when red is worn to symbolise the fire of the Holy Spirit. The prayers and readings focus continually on unity, prayer, mission, and the promise of divine assistance.

For Catholics today, the period between Ascension and Pentecost remains spiritually relevant. It teaches the importance of waiting upon God rather than rushing ahead in our own strength. It reminds the Church that mission flows first from prayer and from the gift of the Holy Spirit. Above all, it reveals the Christian life as one lived in hope: Christ has ascended in glory, the Spirit has been promised, and the Church waits in faith for the fullness of God’s kingdom.
